Did you know that the sea turtle has been around since the late Jurassic period, roughly 150 million years ago? That means that these creatures have been through a lot to survive. Now these beautiful animals are becoming extinct because of what is happening in the ocean, here is the life cycle of the sea turtle.
The mother sea turtle waddles up high on the beach, here she digs her hole and lays her 50-200 ping pong ball sized eggs. Then she buries them and waddles back to the ocean. 1.5 months later the es hatch but 20% of her eggs won’t hatch. The baby sea turtle the size of the palm of your hand scramble to the surface.
Then the babies make their desperate dash to the sea facing many predators such as crabs, gulls, holes in the sand and other threats will claim 50% of those who rose from the sand. Those that actually reach the sea find a whole new set of predators awaiting them some fish, dolphins sharks and more. the babies swim desperately forwards hoping to settle in a pat of seaweed. 50% of those who reach the surf will now perish from sea predators.
Their size will increase from a dinner plate at year one, to a dinner table at year ten. Now the sea turtles are size protected but they still have predators like some sharks and the occasional killer whale. After 20 years of life the turtles are ready to start the life cycle again.
in the last several decades human interference has really disturbed the sea turtles. beach development, plastic refuge, poaching, long lines, noxious chemicals including oil. This added human pressure which has pushed each of the eight sea turtles species into either threatened or endangered state.
In Conclusion the life cycle of the sea turtle is a long and hard process. So I’m sure you don’t what the cute harmless sea turtle become endangered just because of us. We need to think about our actions and make a difference.
